Description The CDMI curriculum comprises integrated oral health and basic sciences emphasizing knowledge, skills and values in clinical areas and disciplines (e.g. Orthodontics, Operative Dentistry, Periodontics, etc.) as required for pre-doctoral education in general comprehensive dentistry. The Full-time Clinical Faculty (Orthodontic Focus), is responsible for the clinical instruction of pre-doctoral students, direct provision of patient care, peripheral oversight of day to day clinic operations, and contribution to the development of the CDMI curriculum and faculty calibration, as assigned. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Pre-doctoral clinical dental education at the College of Dental Medicine - Illinois (CDMI) is based on a General Dentistry model largely supported by generalist faculty, and also supplemented by Dental Specialists and General Dentists with specific and advanced training and skills in the various disciplines of Dentistry The Full-time Clinical Faculty (Orthodontic Focus) performs the following functions, included but not limited to:

  • Provide direct patient care within the scope of practice, with a focus on Orthodontics.
  • Supervise the safe provision of patient care treatment by pre-doctoral dental students.
  • Ensure that the care provided is comprehensive, patient-centered, interdisciplinary, based on evidence and occurs in a compassionate manner.
  • Oversee the provision of urgent care that ensures patient stabilization and pain relief
  • Prevent and intervene to resolve patient management issue When necessary, issue recommendations for dismissal of patients, based upon College protocols and ensuring that due process has been followed Clinic Operations and Quality Improvement
    • Contribute to managing the operational aspects of the General Dentistry clinic, maintaining and promoting an environment of high efficiency with emphasis on maximizing chair utilization, patient account collections, prevention of unallocated items, material efficiency
    • Ensure an optimal faculty: student ratio.
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and University/College protocols (e. OSHA, HIPAA, Infection Control and Clinic Manuals, etc.),
    • Contribute to faculty standardization in the provision of care that follows the CDMI standards of care and other pr
    • Actively participate in continuous quality improvement (CQI) strategies such as the review of clinical records and audits of patient care progress, review of various clinical reports (e.g., unapproved, unassigned, overdue patients, clinical threshold, etc.) and make treatment modifications when necessary. Assess treatment outcomes and promote a non-punitive environment that strives to prevent adverse treatment outcomes. Clinical Education
      • Participate in course-related activities, including course coordination when appropriate
      • Provide clinical Instruction, feedback and assessment for students
      • Monitor student attendance at clinical sessions, and address all compliance-related issues, as appropriate
      • Interact with students and faculty members as required to monitor and assess student performance. Provide effective feedback and prescribe and coordinate on-going remedial actions as the situation demands.
      • Utilize and share EHR-generated reports to monitor student clinical activity within the area of General Dentistry and often specific to Orthodontics
      • Prepare and provide pertinent information regarding student progress as requested by the Clinical Program Director, Associate Dean of Clinical Education, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Dean and others. At all times and in all situations, the Full-time Clinical Faculty (Orthodontic Focus) must demonstrate excellent communication skills and collegial behavior with faculty, staff, students and patients. Reporting Relationship The Full-time Clinical Faculty (Orthodontic Focus) reports to the Associate Dean, Clinical Education Working Relationships The Full-time Clinical Faculty (Orthodontic Focus) interacts significantly with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Associate Dean for Preclinical Education and the Associate Dean for Clinical Education. Additionally, the Full-time Clinical Faculty with a focus on Orthodontics must communicate effectively with all faculty and support staff including Administrative Assistants, Practice Assistants, Clinical Supervisors and Technicians. Supervisory Responsibilities This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience Candidates must possess a DDS/DMD degree or equivalent, and a certificate of postgraduate training focused on Orthodontics. Candidates must be licensed, or be eligible for licensure to practice in the State of Illinois. Preference will be given to those with previous experience in dental education. The successful candidate will be an individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively interact with students, faculty and patients. Computer Skills Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), ability to learn the axiUm (or other) Electronic Health Record, and related programs. Other Skills Required The Full-time Clinical Faculty (Orthodontic Focus) should possess the following skills:
